Types of Noun


We can categorize noun in different ways as........ 

Firstly  there are two kinds of noun :
    
   1. Countable Noun
   2. Uncountable Noun

1.     Countable Noun  :- Countable nouns are things that can be counted like book, car and house.

2.     Uncountable Noun :-  Uncountable nouns cannot be counted such as milk, water, and flour.

 There are other five kinds of nouns:·
  •     Common Nouns
  •     Proper Nouns
  •     Abstract Nouns
  •     Collective Noun
  •     Material Nouns
Common Nouns
Common nouns are names of people (man, aunt); things (book, car); animals (monkey, armadillo); and places (church, beach).


Proper Nouns
Proper nouns are names of people (George Bush, Obama); things (Financial Times, Eiffel Tower); animals (King Kong, Lassie); and places (London, Central Park). 

Note :
A proper noun begins with a capital letter.
Article does not use with proper noun

Abstract Nouns
An abstract noun is a quality or something that we can only think of rather than as something that we can see or touch, 

e.g. beauty, friendship. 

We can form abstract nouns from common nouns (child – childhood); from verbs (know – knowledge); and from adjectives (happy – happiness).

Collective Nouns
A collective noun is a name we use for a number of people, animals or things which we group together and speak of as a whole. 

For example: a bunch of bananas, a litter of puppies.



Definition of Noun

Definition : Nouns are naming words for people, animals, places, things, and qualities.


Persons :  George, man, people ,Ramesh, staff, tutors, boy
Animals :  cat, fish, dog
Places :    Jacksonville, city, park ,chicago
Things :    paper, spoon, eraser, book, reading, excellence,  Apple Festival
 Ideas :     happiness, horror, thought

Exercise:

Directions: Find out the nouns in each of the following sentences: 

1.  Jason enjoyed the movie about France.
 2.  The musicians play marching songs.
3.  Music lovers thrill to the sound of trumpets.
4.  Boys and girls are often eager to listen.
5.  The conductor moves his baton vigorously.
6.  There is no death penalty for criminals in Puerto Rico.
7.  The "Explorer," crammed with scientific instruments, was launched on January 31, 1958. 
8.  New Mexico was admitted as a state in the twentieth century.
9.  Chester Arthur was nominated for vice-president by the Republican Party in 1880.
10.  Winston Churchill was the man whose courage led the nation from defeat to victory.
