Continuous Present Tense

  • The boys are playing in the garden.
  • I am watching T.V. now.
  • At present,she is doing her homework.
(A)  Form :
  1. Affirmative : Sub + am/is/are + 'verb+ing' (present participle)
  2. Negative :    Sub + am/is/are + not + 'verb+ing' (present participle)
  3. Interrogative
  • Yes/No question :   Am/is/are + Sub + 'verb+ing' (present participle) 
  • Wh-question   :      Sub + am/is/are + 'verb+ing' (present participle)
Examples : 

1. Affirmative Sentence
  • She is singing a song now.
  • You are learning English grammer now.
2. Negative Sentences
  • It is not raining now.
  • They are not working now.
3. Interrogative Sentences :
  • Are they coming with us?
  • Is she working hard?
  • Why are you crying?
(B)  Keywords
  • now
  • at present
  • at this time
 (C) Uses of Present Continuous Tense
       
1. Action going on the time of speaking.
  • She is singing a film song now.
  • It is raining outside now.
2. Incomplete Action
  • I am reading a play by Shakespeare.
  • They are building a new hostel for the girls.
3. Near,determined future 
  • He is coming next week.
  • We are leaving for Mumbai tomorrow.
4. With the words of attention like (see,listen,be silent,etc.)
  • See,the bus is coming
  • Be silent,the classes are going on.
(D)  Passive Construction

       Form : Sub + am/is/are + being + past participle + object
  • She is reading a book. ( active)
  • A book is being read by her. (passive)
  • They are singing a weeding song.(active)
  • Awedding song is being sung by them.( Passive)

(E) Difference between Simple Present and Continuous Tense 
 
   (a)   1. Simple Present tense --------- Permanent action.
           2. Present Continuous Tense--- Temporary action.
Examples :
  • They live in a rented house. ( Permanent Action)
  • They are living in a rented house. ( Temporary Action)
  (b)   Continuous present tense is not used with following verbs.

Verb of perception --- feel,hear,smell,taste,believe,desire,dislike,doubt,hope,know,like,love.understand,seem,appear,think
  • I know his intention. (Not I am knowing)
  • She thinks that will do that. ( not she is thinking)
